Local Skier Peaks Just in Time

By tlahaye

Steve LaHaye, who races for the Wintergreen Race Team, won four golds, a silver, and a bronze over the last three weekends, racing in North Carolina, West Virginia, and at his home resort in Nelson County, Virginia.

Three weekends ago, he won the Southern Slalom at Sugar Mountain, near Boone, North Carolina, finishing second in the giant slalom. Two weekends ago, he won a one-run giant slalom at Snowshoe Resort near Cass, West Virginia, finishing third in a two-run event held the same day. This last weekend, he swept the J3 (13-14 year old) field at Wintergreen, winning Saturday's slalom and Sunday's giant slalom races.

An eighth grader at Taylor Middle School, Steve is in his fourth year of ski racing, and competes in the USSA sanctioned Southern Alpine Race Assaociation (SARA), which includes Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina, with other racers from Maryland, Georgia, Tennessee, Ohio, and the District of Columbia.

He is hitting his stride just in time for the regional finals scheduled for February 23 and 24 at Massanutten Resort near Harrisonburg, Virginia.
