Brentsville beats neighbor Kettle Run, 3-0, in girls soccer semis
Kettle Run's defense faced a stern challenge against Brentsville's strong offense in last Tuesday's Northwestern District girls soccer semifinals.
At the end of the 80 minutes, Brentsville won 3-0 by steadily breaking down the Cougars.
Kettle Run's standout freshman goalie, Hannah Carr, blocked shots taken roughly a foot or two away to keep her team in it, but ultimately the Tigers were too dangerous.
After an undefeated regular season, Brentsville (18-1) went on to lose to Sherando in last Thursday's district final, 2-1. Brentsville still advanced to the regional tournament.
The Tigers hosted Heritage or Fluvanna on Wednesday (May 27).
Despite its third loss to Brentsville this year, Kettle Run saw its season end with an encouraging 10-6-2 record.
“In order to (beat Brentsville) you must raise your level of play — something that comes with time and experience," said Kettle Run coach Bob Ruhland, whose girls lost to Brentsville 1-0 and 3-0 in the regular season.
Unlike their last meeting on May 8 in which Kettle Run held Brentsville scoreless in the first half, Brentsville did not waste any time in this semifinal.
Brentsville's first deep drive resulted in a goal off a penalty kick by Kelsi Whalen early in the game. The Tigers led 2-0 at halftime on a goal by forward Ashley Grant.
