Students Face Daunting Summer-Job Market

High school and college students looking for summer jobs could find that work is harder to come by this year.

“There just aren't as many jobs [this year] as there have been in the past,” said Jo Scott, the Career Center director at Liberty High School.

This year, Scott said most of the bulk postings she's received re for positions in the county's Department of Parks and Recreation, mostly for lifeguard positions.

Currently, only one position for a lifeguard is posted on the county's Web site. As of Tuesday, the Parks and Recreation Department also had openings for a swimming instructor and assistant swimming instructor at the Larry Weeks Community Pool at Vint Hill.

There are similar openings with the Town of Warrenton. According to its Web site, the town is looking for qualified applicants for several positions, including a water safety instructor at the Warrenton Aquatic Recreational Facility.

The town is also seeking a part-time laborer to do park maintenance 24 hours per week. More details are available at www.townofwarrenton.com.

In addition to getting bulk postings online, Scott said she's been perusing newspaper ads to see if there are any other seasonal jobs for LHS students.

Meanwhile, Mark Bjorkman, the guidance director at Fauquier High School, said students often hear about summer jobs through word of mouth.

“I may get a phone call from a parent who's looking for someone to help with the horses on their farm, and they'll want to know if we have any students who are interested,” Bjorkman said.
