Springs Road Work Is Part of Fiber Optic Loop

A portion of a fiber optic loop that will connect businesses — and eventually homes — in our area to existing data centers in Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C., is now being installed along Springs Road near Warrenton.

FiberLight LLC of Atlanta, Ga., and Team Fishel crews have teamed up to install the loop.

In an interview last fall, FiberLight CEO Mike Miller told the Times-Democrat it was his goal for many years to bring fiber and high-capacity technology to the Manassas/Warrenton/Haymarket area where he grew up.

“Now I have the opportunity to realize that dream,” he said.

All of the cable along the 130-mile route is being laid underground to preserve the rural landscape.

Brad Dunlevy, who is overseeing the work For Team Fishel, said crews will be working on Springs Road in Fauquier and Culpeper counties for approximately two months. Work is also being done along Route 229 in Culpeper County.

In addition to Fauquier and Culpeper, the fiber optics loop will run through Loudoun, Prince William and Rappahannock counties.

Fiber optics allow companies or government agencies to connect with cell towers and provide end users with broadband capabilities. Ultimately, fiber optic communications will be available to area residents through broadband service providers.

Other potential benefits include expansion of telework business centers that offer connection to the fiber optic loop resulting in the ability to sustain reliable, high-speed communication beyond anything currently in use.

With access to fiber optics in Fauquier County and other nearby communities, more employers — including the federal government — will be able to establish offices here. That in turn would result in more economic growth while reducing the need for many people to commute to work, thereby reducing traffic congestion and pollution.
