Bowman nominated for prestigious track award
Sarah Bowman’s list of track accomplishments and honors is beginning to stretch as long as her signature race.
A 1,500-meter runner at the University of Tennessee, Bowman was most recently nominated for the 2009 Honda Sports Award for track and field. The Fauquier High product is one of four NCAA Division I women nominated for the award based on her track accomplishments, of which the latest was qualifying for the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships on Saturday.
Nationwide balloting will be held to determine the Honda Sports Award winner. That person will also then become a candidate for The Honda-Broderick Cup, which is given to the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year, as determined by a vote of athletic directors across the country.
Former Tennessee women’s basketball player Candace Parker won the 2007-08 Honda-Broderick Cup. She went on to be selected No. 1 in the WNBA draft by the Los Angeles Sparks and became the first player in WNBA history to be named Rookie of the Year and MVP in the same year.
Bowman’s collegiate honors already include being named SEC Indoor Female Runner of the Year, SEC Indoor Cliff Harper Trophy winner, Penn Relays Outstanding Female Relay Athlete, Tennessee's Best Female Athlete, all-American twice, all-Region twice and all-SEC four times.
Between indoor and outdoor track and field and cross country, Bowman, a senior, is a nine-time all-American and 17-time all-SEC honoree. She owns two world records, three American and collegiate records, two NCAA meet records and seven school records...
