Probation And Parole Officers Honored

As probation and parole officers, David Curro and Stephanie MacDonald say they deal with a part of society that most people want to ignore.

Both officers are state employees who work with offenders that are sentenced in Fauquier County Circuit Court. Most people sentenced on felony offenses there receive some type of supervised probation instead of or along with jail or prison terms.

Curro and MacDonald are responsible for ensuring that the offenders comply with the terms of their probation. If the offenders don’t, they risk being reincarcerated.

“The citizens of Fauquier County don’t want to know we have approximately 475 convicted felons being supervised [in the community],” Curro said.

Curro has served as a probation and parole officer for the commonwealth for 21 years. For the past 12 years, he has overseen high-risk groups of adult probationers and parolees in Fauquier, Loudoun and Rappahannock counties.

“We try to know as much as we can about the people we supervise,” Curro said. “We get mental health involved [when need be]. We do home visits, record checks, urine screens and make sure they get substance-abuse counseling. It is pretty much non-stop from 8:15 a.m. to 5p.m. [every day].”

The effort hasn’t gone unnoticed.
