Farming dreams alive and well

The smile on her face says it all.

Standing in muddy boots in her barnyard, surrounded by a menagerie of livestock, Deanna Child seems completely content with her life as a farmer.

A former Fairfax city slicker, Child dreamed of farming for years before she convinced her husband Mark to go along with the idea. The family, including children, Matthew, 17, Hayley, 14, and Luke, 13, moved to Flat Rock Farm near Orlean just over three years ago.

I just wanted to be a farmer. I didn’t really have a plan of what I was going to do, what aspect of farming I’d do,” Child said recently from her 13-acre farm.

Child has fully embraced her new occupation, overcoming the inevitable trials and relishing in the triumphs. Turning to the local Virginia Cooperative Extension office and neighboring farmers for guidance, she has learned a lot in a short time.

I called up [Virginia Cooperative Extension agent] Tim [Mize] and said I want to be a farmer, what do I do? He’s been just great,” Child said.

Interestingly, coming to farming as a novice has provided Child with a different perspective from long-time producers, and she's been able to give back to them with creative ideas for moving their wares, noted Mize.
