Push for Video Warnings Gathers Growing Support

Efforts to put health warning labels on violent video games are definitely worthwhile, according to one local pediatrician.

Rep. Frank Wolf (R-10) recently announced that he is co-sponsoring legislation that requires all video games with a rating of “Teen” or higher be sold with a health warning label. The labels will be similar to those now found on cigarettes and alcohol.

As stipulated in the Video Game Health Labeling Act of 2009, the warning labels will read: “WARNING: Excessive exposure to violent video games and other violent media has been linked to aggressive behavior.”

Wolf has been speaking out about violence in video games like “Grand Theft Auto,” “Killzone” and “Gears of War” — and their respective sequels — for several years. He said parents should know as much as possible about the video games their children are playing.

Just as we warn smokers of the health consequences of tobacco, we should warn parents — and children — about the growing scientific evidence demonstrating a relationship between violent video games and violent behavior,” Wolf said. “As a parent and a grandparent, I think it is important people know everything they can about the extremely violent nature of some of these games.”

Dr. Dennis Rustom concurred.
