Storms spare Virginia...this time
Bob Blair is still accepting donations for a “rainy-day” fund.
Blair is in charge of the Woodstock-based charity, World Foundation for Children — an umbrella organization for two Volunteer Farms providing food to the hungry in Fauquier and surrounding counties.
A few weeks ago, the WFC requested donations to help children in the event that any of the tropical storms which then threatened the mid-Atlantic caused catastrophic damage in Virginia.
Even though those storms petered out, Blair said the organization is still planning to set up a “reserve fund.” The money in it would be used specifically to help children affected by future disasters in the commonwealth. It would not be used for anything else, Blair stressed.
“We too often forget the children in a disaster when their parents fail to qualify for sufficient traditional disaster assistance to get back on their feet,” Blair explained when he first requested donations.
“With the current economy, there may be parents who will be unable to qualify for federal low-interest disaster loans, simply because they do not have the capability to repay the loans.”
As initially planned, the WFC would distribute some of the donated funds to churches in affected areas. Pastors could then make sure kids in need of clothing would get it.
Funds would also be used to help pay for health care, housing, food, transportation or “other needs not met by other disaster assistance programs.”
Tax-deductible donations should be sent to WFC, 277 Crider Lane, Woodstock VA 22664.
Donors wishing to have 100 percent of their contributions devoted to Virginia should note on the check that it should be used only for “VA Disaster Aid.” Donations may also be made online at www.WorldFoundationForChildren.com.
