Warrenton man wins cash, prizes, and landscape plan

Murray Branson has a knack for beating the odds. In one case, that was not a good thing, but more recently his luck took a turn for the better.

The odds of being bitten by a shark, according to www.msn.com, are about one in eight million. As a young Navy man, Branson pulled that unlucky card and was attacked off the shore of North Carolina. The bite cost him pints of blood and the loss of feeling in his left hand. In exchange, he got a cool scar and an interesting story.

Recently, he broke the odds in a much less painful way. Branson was selected from more than 450,000 online entries to win the Troy-Bilt Love-Your-Yard Makeover sweepstakes.

Though the odds weren't quite as long, the results were much better.

The prize, delivered this week, included four pieces of Troy-Bilt equipment — a zero-turn riding lawn mower, a self-propelled mower, a garden tiller and a trimmer.

Branson and his fiancee Teresa Wangler also won a landscape consultation and custom design from Justin Cave, host of HGTV's “Ground Breakers,” as well as a $3,000 cash prize.

We haven't had this much company in years,” said a grinning Branson as representatives from HGTV and Troy-Bilt arrived at his Warrenton Lakes home Tuesday morning.

I've never won anything,” he added, noting that it wasn’t for a lack of trying. According to Wangler, Branson is “religious” about entering online contests and drawings. The couple is interested in gardening and watches HGTV regularly, so this prize was especially fitting, they said.
