I-66 detours in place overnight

By Staff

The Virginia Department of Transportation has announced the detour in place today as part of the I-66 widening project in Gainesville will be extended through the evening rush hour and possibly overnight so workers can remove steel beams that fell during the demolition. The following detours will also be in place:

-- Eastbound I-66 will be detoured at Haymarket [Exit 40] for cranes and equipment to access the site. Motorists should turn right at Route 15, left at Route 55 and left onto northbound U.S. 29.

-- U.S. 29 remains closed between Heathcoate Boulevard and Route 55.

Electronic message boards will direct motorists traveling north on U.S. 29 in Gainesville to go east on I-66 to the Route 234 Bypass [Exit 44]. Turn left onto Balls Ford Road, turn left at Groveton Road and right onto U.S. 29.

Motorists traveling south on U.S. 29 will turn left at the signal at Heathcoate Boulevard onto the ramp to I-66 west/U.S. 29 south. Stay to the left and follow signs to southbound U.S. 29.

The steel beams fell during the demolition on a portion of the abandoned I-66 Eastbound span over U.S. 29. The beams fell onto the shoulder of northbound U.S. 29 and there was no road damage.
