Warrenton's Main Streeet returns to normal after election excitement

The presidential campaign blew into Warrenton several weeks ago. With fanfare, both major party candidates opened offices on Main Street, reflecting the national excitement about the election.

Since early September, the headquarters for Republican candidate John McCain at 19 Main St. has been bustling with activity. T-shirts and hats supporting the candidates packed the storefront windows and demand for yard signs was brisk.

Long a Republican stronghold, Fauquier voted overwhelmingly for the McCain-Palin ticket. But once the national verdict declared Democratic candidate Barack Obama the winner, the local office was quick to close its doors. By 11 a.m. Wednesday morning, all traces of the campaign had been removed from the storefront. A few folding tables and party remnants remained inside the deserted building. Building owner Patricia Fitch said Thursday that she is unsure about what she'll do with the now vacant space. She may open an art gallery there or, perhaps, rent it to a "business that would be beneficial to Main Street."

At the opposite end of Main Street, signs still adorn the Obama headquarters. Located at 92 Main St., the Democratic office saw its share of activity through the election season, as a dedicated group of volunteers worked to deliver the heavy Republican territory for their candidate.

Though it was closed Wednesday morning, a stream of visitors dropped by, rattling the locked door and peering inside. A sign on the door directed supporters to Election Day parties. According to CRES Inc. leasing agent Lorri Henry, the Obama campaign's lease expires on the location Nov. 23. Henry said the space, part of the former Blue Ridge Hardware building, will be vacant and available for lease when the office is closed.
