Falcons to Eagles: Not this time

Earlier this season, the Liberty High boys soccer team pulled off an rare victory over their county rival, downing Fauquier 2-0. It was the Eagles' only win this year.

That loss — including the front page headline in the Fauquier Times-Democrat, “We just whooped Fauquier” —served as fuel for an FHS squad determined to get revenge on Senior Night Wednesday in Warrenton.

Goals by Fauquier's Ryan Wagoner roughly five minutes into the second half, and then Ian Burns about 15 minutes later, went unanswered by the visiting Eagles, who lost 3-1. The game was tied 1-1 at halftime.

“We put the article from the first game up in our locker room as a reminder,” said Falcon junior Zach O'Neill. “We weren't going to let them beat us this time.”

O'Neill said the key to winning “was that we played well as a team and we kept our focus. We played a consistent game this time and that has been a problem for us throughout the season.”

The beginning of the end seemed to come early for the Liberty in this spirited rematch.

A quick goal in the opening seconds by Falcon senior Michael Bunt would haunt the Eagles most of the first half. But Liberty’s Raymundo Balderas scored off a breakaway before intermission, and the Eagles could breathe easy.

This relief came prematurely, though, as Fauquier dominated after halftime...
