Despite 5-1 loss, Liberty girls improve as game goes on

Liberty coach Bob Ruhland could not be disappointed at losing to Battlefield Friday night in Haymarket.
His girls managed to hold the Cedar Run District's top team to only one second-half goal with underclassmen doing the bulk of the defensive work for him in the backfield.
“I don’t ever complain [about] losing to talent,” he said.
The Bobcats (11-1) unleashed a fury of goals right out from the gate as part of a 5-1 victory over the Eagles (2-8-1). In total, the hosts attempted 18 shots on goal to Liberty’s two, both of which were taken by sophomore defender Samantha Harrover.
Battlefield’s attackers mauled Liberty’s defense in the first five-and-a-half minutes, scoring three times with three different players.
Nifty footwork by Jessica Jewell — an elite Cedar Run forward — drew sophomore goalkeeper Megan Resseman from the net, allowing the Battlefield senior to tap in a light dribbler 58 seconds into the match.
Moments later, freshman Tara Rotante broke away from the Liberty defense and caught Resseman guessing. Rotante instead deposited her shot in the opposite end of the net, increasing the Battlefield lead to 2-0...See the Wednesday print edition of the Fauquier Times-Democrat for the complete story.
