Fire and rescue responds to 'haz mat' incidents

Fire and rescue personnel recently responded to two incidents involving hazardous materials.

According to Department of Fire and Emergency Services Chief Philip Myer, one of the incidents happened at the Bloom supermarket in Marshall on June 12.

A "significant" freon/refrigerant leak occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m., when a half-inch refrigerant line from the compressor broke, Myer said. The leak caused a large "mist plume."

Haz-mat technicians from Fauquier County fire and rescue stations entered the building and secured the leak approximately 45 minutes after the initial call. They identified the material that leaked as R-22 refrigerant.

Representatives from the Health Department and service technicians also responded to the scene, Myer said.

The second incident occurred June 13, in the area of Catlett Road and Elk Run Road. At approximately 8 a.m., a resident called 911 and reported something was leaking out of a railroad car after the engines left.

Fire and rescue personnel responded to the scene, and determined that approximately 4800 gallons of calcium chloride had spilled.

"These [railroad] cars are on the side track for a VDOT contractor who spreads the liquid on gravel roads for the summer. It absorbs moisture reducing the dust," Myer explained. "The product is also used on roads to melt ice/snow in the winter."

Representatives from Norfolk Southern Railroad also came to the scene, along with a cleanup crew, Myer said.

The spill did not pose a hazard to people, Myer said.

Vandals strike

The Fauquier County Sheriff's Office received two reports of destruction of property involving graffiti on June 13.

One of the complainants came from the 8300 block of West Main Street in Marshall, according to police records. The caller reported damage to county property, and it turned out that someone had spray painted the letters "DIC" on an office door, police said. The estimated loss in the case is $30.

In the second case, someone from the 7200 block of Shrewbarry Lane in Nokesville also reported damage to county property. Police said the complainant notified them that someone had used white spray paint to paint the letters "KKK" followed by an expletive on the road. The estimated damage in that case is $150.

Eluding charged

David MacIver of Catlett was arrested charged with eluding June 13, police said.

Maj. Greg Mauck said the arrest stemmed from an incident in which a deputy spotted MacIver on an ATV in the 10000 block of Brent Town Road in Catlett. MacIver allegedly drove the ATV into an area where the deputy could not follow, Mauck said.

In addition to eluding, the deputy obtained and later served MacIver with a warrant charging him with reckless driving, operating an ATV on a highway and operating an uninsured vehicle on a highway, Mauck said.

Corbett said that Matthews was not wearing his seatbelt and that speed was "definitely a factor" in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.

Woman injured, charged

Police said a Bealeton woman was charged with driving on a revoked or suspended license after she was involved in a motor vehicle accident June 9.

An accident report taken by a Fauquier County deputy indicates the wreck happened in the 6200 block of Catlett Road at approximately 5:25 p.m.

Amanda Latoria Johnson, 31, was driving a 1995 Nissan Pathfinder northbound on Catlett Road [Route 28] when she lost control of the vehicle, according to the report. It veered left and Johnson apparently overcorrected, causing it to fishtail. The vehicle then went off the right side of the road, where it hit a tree before spinning and hitting a second tree.

Johnson was pinned in the vehicle, according to the report.

She was reportedly transported to the hospital by EMS personnel.
