Thefts from vehicles discovered

Warrenton police are once again urging residents to safeguard their property in the wake of several thefts from motor vehicles.

Sgt. George W. Southard Jr. said Officer A.A. Moran went to Brookshire Drive at approximately 6:30 a.m. May 28 for reported thefts from vehicles. When Moran got there, he discovered several vehicles had been entered overnight.

Most of the vehicles were unlocked, but a locked vehicle was entered by breaking a window, Southard said.

The estimated loss of property is more than $4,000.

"Even though suspects have been developed, the Town of Warrenton continues to experience thefts from vehicles," Southard said. "Purses, wallets, laptop computers, cell phones, Ipods, prescription medications and firearms are some of the personal property that has been stolen."

Such items should not be left in motor vehicles, the sergeant added.

Southard also advised residents to keep their vehicles free of clutter. Vehicles should be locked and anything of value should be taken out.

"If your purse or wallet is taken you could be come the victim of other crimes such as stolen checks, credit cards or even identity theft," Southard said.

He encourages any resident who discovers their vehicle has been entered overnight to report the incident to police — even if nothing has been taken.

"Continue to report all suspicious activity and persons when they are observed in your neighborhood," Southard concluded.
