The Plains This Week: Traffic calming committee meets
I will never tire of Fauquier County's beauty. Driving west out of town, the summer sun's slanting rays lit up the coppery red fox hunting grasshoppers in the green grass. I slowed down, pulled off the road and watched the fox as it pounced on the insects. The fox would occasionally look over at my car to be sure I had not crept too close. Just another reason to call Fauquier home — free fox grasshopper-catching demonstrations.
The residents of The Plains have formed a traffic calming committee. This group meets to discuss ways to increase traffic safety in town by lowering the speed of cars coming through.
The group's meetings are open to all residents of The Plains. Sgt. Paul Mercer from the Fauquier County Sheriff's office is coming to the meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, in the John Page Turner House to discuss the possibilities, as well as issues regarding a mobile radar unit for The Plains.
On Aug. 14, the "A Day in The Plains" Planning Committee is meeting at 7 p.m. at the John Page Turner House on Main Street.
A Day in The Plains is the annual town celebration held the first Saturday in October. The planning for this town-wide party is in high gear.
All residents are welcome at the meeting as the group prepares for the World Famous 2nd Annual Parade in The Plains and all the other activities of A Day in The Plains. Come to the planning meeting on Aug. 14 and be a part of making it the best party of the year.
If you move faster than a pitched softball, you still have time to sign up for the exciting Fauquier Girls Softball Association league. The FGSA is accepting registrations through July 31. Girls 5-18 years of age can play, and all skill levels are welcome, from beginner to all-star.
In addition to recreational team play, FGSA also offers post season all-star play in the spring (FURY) and tournament team play (FUSION). Girls from all over Fauquier County and nearby counties have played with FGSA. Bobby and Bobbie Weeks' wedding anniversary is July 31. On Aug. 1, Jason Koglin and Harwood Wolfson celebrate a birthday.
