Markham This Week: Share dessert, music at hymn sing

July is marching along; four more days. Teacher friends are thinking about their return to the classroom; kids are not counting the days until they go.

Birthday greetings this week to Katherine Piper, Hugh Langford, Gary Lowden, Margaret Wise, Paul Prideaux, Ann Prideaux, and Hayden Shaw. Some are telling their age; others not. Celebrate and have a great day.

The community hymn sing, co-sponsored by the Orlean United Methodist Church and Leeds Episcopal Church, will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, at the Leeds Church parish hall.

The evening will begin with dessert (please bring something to share), then move into singing those familiar hymns. Everyone is invited. This a good time to meet and visit with neighbors and friends.

The Blue Ridge Flower Club held its yearly picnic at the home of Ann and Bob Emery on Sunday evening. No business meeting; just fun.

Leeds Episcopal Church will resume the regular Sunday service schedule on Sunday, Aug. 3, with services at 8 and 10:30 a.m. Only one service was held each Sunday during July. The Leeds Homecoming will be held on Sunday, Aug. 17.

Fauquier Girls Softball Association is accepting registrations through July 31. Girls ages 5-18 can play, and all skill levels are welcome. Check out www.FauquierGirlsSoftball.com or call (540) 347-5063.

Folks have been asking about the twin kittens who are now sharing this house. They are doing well; into all sorts of mischief ( climbing on the mantel piece, exploring the potted plants, checking out the sewing machine), and growing like weeds. The adult cats are trying to ignore them, and the dog, well, she wishes they were some place else. It all adds spice to life here in Orlean.
