Schedules make room for new football rivalries
Football season is just around the corner.
Kettle Run, Fauquier High and Liberty are set to begin practice in two weeks and will then bookend the 2008 season with a couple Fauquier County showdowns.
In its inaugural season, Kettle Run has the difficult task of playing its first home game against Liberty on Aug. 29. Then the Cougars will have to play at Fauquier the following week.
"Our first two games are two big tasks, playing two big AAA schools and we're AA," Kettle Run coach Jeff Lloyd said. "They'll be two very big games for our program as we get further into it."
The rest of the Cougars' schedule consists of a variety of private schools, West Virginia public schools and another brand-new football program in Culpeper, Eastern View.
Meanwhile, Liberty has the tough task of playing six of 10 games on the road this year after playing six at home in 2007.
This could prove to be a challenge, as Liberty also plays against bigger Cedar Run District schools like Osbourn, Osbourn Park, Battlefield and Stonewall Jackson.
At the end of the year, Liberty will play Fauquier High in the much anticipated Bird Bowl. A victory in this rivalry game can make a team’s season, even if it plays horribly otherwise.
Lloyd expects the Cougars will develop a similar rivalry with both Fauquier and Liberty.
"I don't know if it's as big, but eventually it will be," he said.
Fauquier is coming off one of its best seasons in history, finishing with an 8-2 record and qualifying for the Northwest Region Tournament, while Liberty finished with a very respectable 7-3 record but failed to make regionals.
With Kettle Run becoming Fauquier County's third public high school, Fauquier High and Liberty will each lose about 20 players to the Cougars and that could significantly hurt the depth of each team.
"If we stay healthy and things go right, we will be fine," Liberty coach Tommy Buzzo said. "But if we have injuries and can't stay healthy, our depth is going to suffer significantly..."See the Wednesday print edition of the Fauquier Times-Democrat for the complete story.
