Catlett This Week: Old pictures of Catlett needed

I'm sure all of you have seen our new Fire and Rescue building being built on Catlett Road. Butch Flippo, our chief, is hopeful that it will be finished the latter part of September.

When it is finished, there will be an open house for all to see. We are now trying to get as many pictures of the old homes, businesses, churches, etc. to tell the story of Catlett, to be placed in the new building.

If you have any you would share with us, please contact me. I will scan them and get them back to you immediately. We are especially interested in old black-and-white photos. Size doesn't matter. Credit will be given to you for your participation.

Our community was saddened last week by the loss of an old friend, Birdie Mercer. Several years ago, she and her husband Fred moved to Georgia. She is also survived by her son, John of Front Royal.

We also regret the passing of "Dike" Holmes, a lifelong member of our community. He is survived by his daughter, Tracie Anderson, her husband Hal, two grandchildren, and two brothers and four sisters. Our sympathy is extended to both these families, as well as to their host of friends.

More on Fauquier County Fair winners from Catlett: Matthew Harrover won the Barnyard Beauties contest, after dressing his Grand Champion Steer as a horse, saddle and all, and riding it. Madeline Harrover won the Junior Pie-Eating contest, Kayla Harrover won the Senior Round Robin Showmanship contest, and the Harrover family received the Herdsman award for large animals.

It was a pleasure to talk with Kay Shuck and James (Dan) Daniels as they manned the booth for "Cows-n-Corn" at the fair. Kay was telling me about the winnings of her family. Daughter and granddaughter, Teresa and Katie Kotulla, both won Blue Ribbons: Teresa winning Best in Show for her white onion, Katie for her sunflowers. Kay's grandson, Nicky VonTomaszewski, won a red ribbon for his Buff Orrington pullet. Congratulations to all.

Loretta and David Wade of Woodruff, S.C., visited this week with his dad, Steve, and wife Diane. Loretta also visited her daughter, granddaughter and brand new great-granddaughter of Haymarket.
