Bethel United Methodist Church
Bethel United Methodist Church is located at 6903 Blantyre Road (Route 628) in the Bethel Academy subdivision, a quarter-mile off U.S. 17, north of Warrenton. The church was built in 1834 and has more than 170 years of continuous service to the community.
More than 100 new members have joined in the last eight years, and the membership is more than 240. The new social hall building, completed in 2006, has expanded ministry opportunities.
Bethel Church's mission statement is "living our faith, sharing God's love." The people of Bethel believe it is important to build faith and move to a closer relationship with God. The heart of Bethel Church is caring connection lived out in worship, outreach and nurture activities.
Worship services are biblically based and traditional in nature. The services are Sunday morning at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m., with nursery available at both services.
The first service is shorter and has no choir, no children's message and celebrates communion only on the first Sunday of the month.
The second service is a traditional service lasting about an hour and 20 minutes. Sunday school classes are held between the two morning services and are available for all ages.
In addition to Sunday morning Bible study, there are numerous study opportunities during the week. Sunday evenings include two 30-week adult studies, youth group, and BASIC (Brothers and Sisters in Christ) Training for younger children. A women's Bible study meets on Friday morning.
Bethel Church sponsors Boy Scout Troop 161, provides monthly dinners for the Warrenton Ruritans, and regularly hosts groups from Hospice of the Rapidan and the Telephone Pioneers, as well as a group of seniors for their monthly meeting.
Traditional outreach activities include support for Habitat for Humanity, the Warrenton homeless shelter, Relay for Life and weekly AA meetings.
Unique outreach activities include an annual mission trip to Pocahontas, Va., active support for Kairos prison ministry, and "random acts of kindness."
Nurture activities, like movie and game nights, fellowship dinners, picnics, and hymn sings occur regularly and extend the bonds of Christian fellowship.
Bethel's pastor, Marty Martin, extends this invitation: "If you are looking for a church that is focused on God, active and engaged, and caring and connected, come visit us on a Sunday morning. We gather for fellowship before both services."
