On a hot day, there's nothing like cooling off with cream pie
There's a universal truth to pie eating contests. It's that the competitors and spectators seem to have a blast regardless of who wins.
There's something comical about all those cream-filled faces that bring out observer comments like, “You can breathe later!” or, “Dig in there, honey!”
The Fauquier County Fair's pie-heating contest was held at 2:30 p.m. — right in the heat of the afternoon last Saturday. Perhaps the 90-plus temps made the competitors more eager to dip their faces in some cool filling and whipped cream.
Spurred on by the crowd commentary was youth division winner Jocelyn Norman of Nokesville. As she struggled to finish her chocolate pie without using her hands, Norman found inspiration. The motivating comments by the adults helped her finish first.
“It was really fun and I enjoyed it,” Norman said excitedly after her win.
Contestants were given the choice of chocolate, lemon or cookies and cream pies to eat.
The next big decision was how to go about eating their preferred flavor. Many participants were confused as one young boy just threw his face into his pie, smearing the cream everywhere as a result.
He was not alone in getting food on most of his facial features.
