O'Meara steps down from softball post

Fresh off his team's second straight state title - and the birth of his first daughter - Highland coach Donald O'Meara has decided to step down as leader of the Hawks' softball program.

"This decision for me comes in part for many reasons, but ultimately it was a family decision for me with the birth of my new baby girl a week after the State Championship," O'Meara said in an email Friday. "I knew something was going to have to give."

O'Meara is the only coach that Highland softball has ever had. He took over the new program three years ago, guiding the Hawks to three consecutive VIS state championship games, compiling a 55-11 record along the way. Highland has also won three straight Delaney Athletic Conference regular season and tournament crowns.

O'Meara is expected to continue his role as head coach of Highland's girls basketball team in the winter. The Hawks have been to the last three state title games on the hardwood as well.

Read more about O'Meara's decision in next Thursday's Culpeper Times.
