'Touch finishes' help FSC edge Orange, 633-629 in swim thriller
The swimmers were all probably home crashed on their respective couches when a winner was declared in perhaps the closest meet in the Tri-County League history.
By winning the 59th and final event of the day, Fauquier Swim Club edged Orange 633-629 last Saturday, but wasn't assured of its victory until later.
Elsewhere, and less dramatically, the Chestnut Forks Swim Club beat Culpeper Country Club, 641.5-438.5, and the Fauquier Springs Swim Club lost to Culpeper Rec, 795-379.
In what can best be described as swimming nailbiter, the visiting FSC Frogs won the girls medley relay to clinch the victory over defending Tri-County League champion Orange.
“Everyone was really excited,” said assistant coach Sarah Rice, who went on to describe a rather anticlimactic victory scene.
In a little bit of a downer, the victorious Frogs were denied a team celebration due to the length of time it took to tally the final score. “No one was left,” Rice said. “But we called everyone.”
Rice said a new computer scoring program was used that required “some double and triple checking." That's why final results weren't known until well over an hour after the meet, when everyone had dispersed.
The victory improved FSC to 2-0 this summer. Rice said it was a meet that could have gone either way.
“The upper ages all were touch finishes. We out-touched them and got more points,” said the former Fauquier High swimmer.
She said if her team had not won the final event, the meet would have ended in a tie.
Rice, Allie Emerick, Kelsey Smith and Sarah Hudson participated in the final race that gave FSC the win.
Meanwhile, despite moving up to the 13-14 age group to help balance Chestnut Forks' entries in its meet against Culpeper Country Club, 12-year-old Courtney Asawadeekul dominated the races she swam...See the Wednesday print edition of the Fauquier Times-Democrat for the complete story.
