New Baltimore: AMS blew away reading goal

I'm back from my visit to Sweden, land of the midnight sun and home to a lifelong friend I haven't seen in more than 25 years.

Being with my friend, Anna Scherdin, again was like reliving my childhood. She hasn't changed a bit, and neither had I, she told me.

Sipping cognac at 3:30 a.m., while standing on her gravel road, I wondered when the sun would set because it was still light outside. When I asked, Anna replied, "The sun set quite awhile ago, perhaps we should, too. Tomorrow is another day." In reality, it already was the next day, as the sun had set and had risen, unbeknownst to me.

In a beautiful book about Sweden that Anna gave me upon my departure, she wrote, "If laughing makes your life longer, I'll live until I'm 200 years old having spent these past 10 days with you."

We have made a promise to visit one another within the next five years and spend more than just 10 days together.

Wrapping up the school year, Auburn Middle School students and staff exceeded this year's reading goal of 2,600 books by nearly doubling that number to 4,900 books.

School librarian Janet Miles arranged a special assembly on June 7 for students entitled, "The Nicolo Whimsey Show," a hilarious show that included juggling, dancing, and singing. Students were also encouraged to participate by spinning plates, bouncing balls and wearing funny hats.

I hope you have a wonderful and safe July 4 filled with fun and laughter with friends and family. Keep in mind that even though we have experienced much rain this past spring, the ground is dry this week. Play it safe and beware of fire danger.
