Markham: Patriotic service set for July 6

Welcome to summer and all of the fun things like the three Hs: hazy, hot and humid.

The truly wonderful things are fireflies at dusk, those interesting little tree frogs that serenade us each evening, and cool glasses of iced tea and lemonade on the porch. Enjoy.

The Orlean Baptist Church, located on John Barton Payne Road in Orlean, will have a patriotic celebration at 6 p.m. Sunday, July 6, with a guest speaker. Refreshments served afterwards. Everyone is invited.

Birthday greetings this week to Patrick Douglass, Francesca Mastri, Christine Bach, Brett Lowden, Morgan O'Grady, Matt Chacey, Violeta Johnston, Lois Pearson and Georgia Pearson. Get out and enjoy your special day.

Leeds Episcopal Church will have only one service, at 9:30 a.m., during the month of July. Please note the change in service times.

Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church will have Vacation Bible School July 7-11 from 9 a.m. until noon each day. Appropriate activities for children ages three through middle school will be offered.

Pre-registration is requested to count heads or noses. Parents can call (540) 349-3852 to register. This year's program will have a beach theme, "Surfin' Through the Scriptures." All youngsters are invited to attend.

The Leeds Church Youth Group mission team will leave for Bay City, Mich., on Saturday, July 5, for a week of work with youth groups from other denominations. The focus will be on repairs to home of senior citizens.

Team members are the Rev. Jeanie Martinez-Jantz, Adam Burke, Courtney and Julia Nashwinter, and Shawn Nashwinter.

We are pleased to remember Margaret Wiltshire, long-time teacher in Fauquier County and resident of Upperville for many years, as she celebrates her 90th birthday. She is still active as a volunteer at the Winchester Medical Center and maintains a keen interest in her family and friends.

Markham columnist Anne Davis can be reached at (540) 364-1572 or hlfmhouse@erols.com.
