Horses and People brief items

Editor's note: Due to space limitations, the Horse and Field Sports section of this week's Fauquier Times-Democrat newspaper did not include Horses and People briefs, nor the Sporting Calendar. We here at the Horse Sports desk recognize that these two items are by far the most read parts of our unique sports section. Therefore, we are 'publishing' the briefs and calendar in their entirety here online. Please refer to the Times-Democrat for other horse news, but trust that we continue to work hard to keep the horse sports news cranking out for local -- and out-of-area -- readers who've come to rely on.

Do not hesitate to call us at (540) 347-4222 with your horse news items and calendar entries. The Horse Sports section will soon be back up and running as usual in the Times-Democrat. Also, the horse sports desk can provide details on any area event -- upcoming or past -- that you need more information on.

O’Connor elected to AHC board

David O’Connor, president of the United States Equestrian Federation, Olympic gold medalist, Pam American Games and World Equestrian Games medalist as well as a resident of The Plains, has been elected to the Board of Trustees of the Washington, D.C.-based American Horse Council.

In 2004, O’Connor officially retired from international competition and was re-elected as president of USEF for the 2005-2009 term.

As president, he works closely with the FEI, the international governing body for all non-racing horse sports, and serves as the official spokesperson of the federation on all matters relating to its governance and direction.

O’Connor has taken his career in new directions, including international coaching, having accepted the position of coach of the Canadian three-day event team.

He has also become a course designer for such venues as the Ocala Horse Park in Florida, the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington and the Colorado Horse Park.

We are pleased to have someone with David’s experience and ability as a member of our Board”, said Jay Hickey, AHC president. “He provides great contacts with the show industry, both here and abroad.”

Voss art at NSL

An exhibit entitled "The Voss family, artists of American sporting life" is set to open at the National Sporting Library on Aug. 29 in Middleburg.

Organized by the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. and curated by Ms. Gregory R. Weidman, the exhibition features more than 60 works of art by this prolific family of sporting artists who depicted the champions of the American turf and other sporting subjects.

Franklin Brooke Voss (1880-1953) was one of the foremost equestrian artists of the 20th century, painting such champions of American flat racing such as Man o’War, Equipoise, Seabiscuit, War Admiral, Sir Barton and Whirlaway for the premier racing families such as the Whitneys, Riddles, Vanderbilts, Phippses, and Wideners. Franklin Voss also depicted steeplechase races, foxhunting, and coaching. He was also a noted dog portraitist.

His brother, Edward Somerville Voss (1883-1969), was known for his lively watercolors of foxhunting scenes, and sister, Jessie Voss Lewis (1876-1962), captured family members in pastels.

Franklin’s sister-in-law, Elsa Horne Voss (1895-1982), sculpted small bronzes of animals. Each family member is represented in the exhibition.

The painting of legendary champion racehorse Man o’War with jockey Hall of Famer Johnny Loftus is one of the artist’s most recognizable works. The exhibit will feature some of Voss’s preliminary sketches still owned by the family, displayed alongside the related completed works.

The library is the final stop of the Voss exhibit, which opened at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in Saratoga last summer. It will be on view through July 27 at the Maryland Historical Society in Baltimore, Md. The exhibition closes at the NSL next February.

The exhibit is free and open to the public during the library’s hours of operation, which are Tuesdays-Fridays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturdays 1-4 p.m. For more information, call (540) 687-6542 or visit online: www.nsl.org.
