Tennis center gets green light

Area tennis players will soon have a new place to hone their skills.
With a nod from the Warrenton Town Council, a new, temporary indoor tennis center can now be “built” on a portion of a six-acre parcel at the corner of Oak Springs Lane and Broadview Avenue [U.S. 17].
It will be owned and operated by Jack Schore, who has coached on the high school, college and professional levels.
“We are looking to begin construction very soon and to be open in November,” Schore said. “We are hoping to bring the type of services [to Warrenton] that we have brought [to other communities].”
Schore said that the center would consist of two tennis courts underneath an air-supported structure commonly known as a bubble or dome. Such facilities are common throughout the country, he added.
The Viewtown resident said he will teach private and group lessons for beginners to advanced players throughout the year. He also plans on hosting exhibitions and tournaments at the new facility.
The center will cost approximately $300,000.
Reaching a compromise...
The town council paved the way for the project last week by agreeing to waive some of the street front improvements required in the site plan provisions of the Warrenton Zoning Ordinance.
Chris Mothersead, Warrenton's director of planning and community development, said some of the requirements were waived because the center would be built on a portion of the six-acre site.
