Relapse

 Relapse

Once again, I feel compelled to voice my unadulterated opinion. I last wrote in May to express my extreme disappointment and frustration regarding the plans for a Costco in New Baltimore. Now, to add insult to injury I read in the July 23 edition of the Times-Democrat of another proposed new shopping center in New Baltimore.

I sat reading the article and found myself in total disbelief and shock. A 62,300-square-foot center with enough space for restaurants, shops, pharmacy, dry cleaner, bank and professional and medical offices? And drive-throughs?

So, as I said before, the Galloping Development Disease has a good possibility of passing over the border from Prince William into Fauquier County and overcoming our beautiful community with it's dreaded cancer-like tentacles.

It is not enough that those tentacles have reached out from Manassas to Gainesville and down U.S. 29? U. S. 29 is wall-to-wall big-time stores all the way to the Fauquier line.

What a pleasure it was to see that Buckland Farmers' Market was moving its business into Fauquier. A fine country farm-like barn is being built to accommodate its wonderful fresh vegetables, fruits and flowers, not to even mention the wonderful jams and jellies and home-baked pies.

From what I can determine, they seem to be planning to keep that side of U.S. 29 as farmland. Hooray!

The residents of New Baltimore are already facing very unpleasant traffic problems, among other things, when and if Costco comes to town; and now it seems that Riley Road would become the access road to the proposed Brimar shopping center.

Well, I for one — and I'm quite sure I'm not alone in this — want no part of heavy traffic on Riley Road. We've got enough traffic already with the middle school and all the new housing on both sides of the road.

And that traffic will also pass through the crossroad at Broad Run Church Road and Riley Road, just adjacent to a public elementary school.

During school hours, the traffic is already difficult at that point. And for the residents along Riley and its adjacent roads, Riley has been a way to at least avoid some of the traffic on U.S. 29 between Route 605 and New Baltimore.

I heartily recommend to all those concerned by this newest twist in the development plans for New Baltimore to attend the planning commission hearing on Thursday of this week to protest the progression of GDD in Fauquier County.

Help save our county and town from this apparently incurable and contagious blight.
