Commendable effort

Commendable effort

The county supervisors proposal to eliminate density credits for floodplain and steep lopes is fulfilling their duty as good stewards for all the taxpayers.

Paying for unusable land under the Purchase of Development Rights (PDR) program is equivalent to cooking the books, and should be considered illegal.

Although only farmers have responded, the proposal affects all taxpayers, and they should be the consideration.

John R. Griffin's July 9 column ("Proposal gets plowed under by farmers") suggests refunds to farmers on back taxes. This should also include refunds from the PDR recipients. Being self-employed, as farmers are, doesn't prohibit establishing a retirement plan.

In no way do I want to downplay the farmers' concerns.

Let's be honest and correct about what appears to be an illegal situation. Let's be fair and re-evaluate the properties in question.

We should commend the supervisors for this effort. More taxpayers should contact the supervisors to help them determine the wishes of all taxpayers.
