Pinot Noir or Burgundy?

CBS Sitcom Gets the Wine Wrong

I was watching The New Adventures of Old Christine the other night (TiVO it – you’ll love it, I promise).  Anyway, the main character is dating a guy who owns a winery.  And this guy who owns a winery makes a bet that the wine he is sipping is a Pinot Noir.  And the person with whom he’s betting says “AHA – nope, it’s a Burgundy!”  And I’m sort of laughing to myself because we all know that a red Burgundy is a Pinot Noir, right?  Evidently the writers of the show didn’t know that, because winery owner boyfriend gets completely chagrinned and angry at his “mistake”.  Big wine blunder in the annals of TV sitcom writing…

Then I thought to myself, “Well, if fancy-pants Hollywood writers don’t know their wine facts, then I bet a whole lot of normal people don’t know either.”  Then it struck me that this fact would be a great segue for me to mention one of my favorite shows to you and share some illuminating truths about wine in one grand blog.

The Show
New Adventures of Old Christine:
Starring Julia Louise-Dreyfus (Elaine of Seinfeld fame)
Airs: Wednesdays 8:00 pm on CBS
Wine Moments: Constant references to Chardonnay and Kendall-Jackson.  A few good wine quotes: “Nyquil is my bedtime wine.”  Christine is watching television with a man. When he asks if she is dating anyone, Christine says “Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t introduce you?” She then pulls a bottle of K-J Vintner’s Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon off a side table and says, “Joe Campbell, meet Kendall-Jackson!”

The Wine
Red Burgundy = Pinot Noir
Red Burgundy = Chardonnay
Malbec = Cahors
Pinot Grigio = Pinot Gris
Red Bordeaux = Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc (a few more, but those are the main ones you should know)
White Bordeaux = Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon (a few more, but those are the main ones you should know)
Zinfandel = Primitivo
Kabinett, Spaetlaese, Auslese = Riesling
Blanc de Blanc Champagne = 100% Chardonnay
Blanc de Noirs Champagne = Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, primarily Pinot Noir
Northern Rhone = Syrah
Syrah = Shiraz

The list goes on.  But, if you can memorize these you are far more wine savvy than the your typical Hollywood writer.  Bet they’re all a bunch of beer guzzlers anyway.

Cheers!
