The Election and “Trick or Treat…” One in the same?

The Election and “Trick or Treat…” One in the same?

Is it not interesting that Halloween and the election are upon us, almost on the same day; maybe we should make it same day, as both are “trick or treat” days. Elections themselves are interesting because we choose our “representatives” at all levels of government and on Election Day, we are full of anticipation.

On Halloween, we take much glee watching the children “pick” the candy that they wish from a bag of treats offered by the homeowner. It is wonderful to see the “little ones” smiles and enjoy some of their happiness as they bounce, back and forth, going home to home, with great anticipation. The election seems just like a bag of treats, we pick one, and for a few months, are full of anticipation that the candidate will “do what they said they would do.”

Receiving a chocolate bar, savoring the taste gives one great pleasure. Watching the election results provides us insight into what and how Americans are thinking. We may agree or disagree with them and their candidates, but we are gladdened by our right to vote for the candidate of our choosing, and hope that the majority elects them. Does the taste of victory last any longer than the chocolate bar? I think not. The reality of dealing with the masses, whether it is congress, or the public at large, quickly diminishes our sweet “taste” and in many cases quickly turns sour.

Yes, our vote is important, however, if the last few elections are any indication, the country is evenly divided, pro and con, and this “evenness” may prevent the election winner from accomplishing what they originally intended. After the election, we must back the winner, defend their efforts, and help them accomplish their preconceived goals. We must give them a chance…except when it comes to choice. Choice, there is no choice, it is either life or death, and that leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

If you think that choice is a great idea…what day do we take Granddad to the “doctor?”

Happy Halloween and Election Day!
