Installation Service for Pastor Joe Vought
Community Lutheran Church (CLC) exists to let other people know they matter to God, as we let them know they matter to us. We share in Christ's love for the world through our worship and learning, and seek to reach out in His name with witness and service to all people. We believe the Holy Spirit calls us to be an inviting, caring community.

Reverend Wollom A. Jensen to Serve as Guest Preacher
Church President: Having been authorized by the Church to install Rev. Joseph Vought, our co-worker in the Gospel I now ask for certification of his call.
We of Community Lutheran Church after prayerful deliberation, have elected Pastor Joseph Vought as Senior Pastor. I present this letter certifying his call. Our Lord Jesus Christ says: "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you…. (John 20:21-23) And again: "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…. (Matt. 28:18-20) Hear the words addressed to Timothy: Set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity…. (1 Tim. 4:12-16)
Pastor Vought, in the presence of this congregation will you commit yourself to this new trust and responsibility, and promise to discharge your duties in harmony with the constitutions of the church?
I will, and I ask God to help me...A native of Pennsylvania, The Rev. Joseph M. Vought received a Masters of Divinity degree from
The Lutheran Theological Seminary and Washington Theological Consortium in 1983 after graduating from Gettysburg College in 1979 with a Bachelor of Arts in Religion and Philosophy. Ordained in 1983, Pastor Joe served Second English Lutheran Church in Baltimore, MD as Associate Pastor, with an emphasis in Youth and Christian Education. In 1987 he was called to serve as Pastor-Developer of Lutheran Church of Our Saviour, Richmond, VA. He was responsible, along with lay leaders, for building the membership, program ministries and buildings of the congregation. During his pastorate at Our Saviour, he supervised four interns. He served as pastor/counselor to Petersburg Work Camp, a “Habitat for Humanity-like” summer camp for senior high youth. For six years he served as a volunteer chaplain on Virginia’s “Death Row” at Mecklenburg Correctional Center and provided pastoral care to seven men before and during their executions. He has spoken publicly on the Death Penalty and has published several articles on his death row experiences.
In 1997 Pastor Joe was called to serve as Senior Pastor of Muhlenberg Lutheran Church in Harrisonburg, VA. Because of Pastor Joe’s work with pastoral colleagues and lay leaders, the past eleven years there have witnessed dramatic growth in membership and ministries, as well as several capital campaigns and building projects. He served as President of the Harrisonburg Interfaith Association, and has been an advocate in ecumenical affairs, representing the Virginia Synod for over 15 years to encourage denominational cooperation in service, dialogue and full communion partnerships. Pastor Joe received a Doctor of Ministry Degree from Wesley Seminary in the area of Ecumenism and Reconciliation in 2005. He served as a Board Member of Lutheran Family Services of Virginia, and for the past ten years has been a volunteer Hospice chaplain.
Pastor Joe is married to Debra Swenson and have two children, Kristin, 23 and Jonathan, 20. Pastor Joe and Debra enjoy physical exercise and have always been members of a health club. They also enjoy movies, reading and traveling. They are excited to begin this new chapter in serving and building up the Body of Christ at Community Lutheran in Sterling.
Pastor Joe started his ministry at Community Lutheran on October 20, and spoke to us from the pulpit as our pastor for the first time on October 26, 2008. Pastor Joe and Debra have since moved from Harrisonburg and now live in Sterling.

Community Lutheran Sanctuary
Pastor Joe was formally installed as our pastor in January 2009. We look forward with joy to serving and building up the Body of Christ with Pastor Joe.
The people of Community Lutheran move forward prayerfully with the promise of Ephesians 3:20-21 in their hearts:“Now to God who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to God be glory in the Church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”
